Entries have closed. The institute's schedule points to a shortlist in November and potential internships for eligible winners, subject to vacancies.

Rwanda's National Institute of Statistics (NISR) is reviewing projects submitted to its 2026 Big Data Hackathon. According to its published competition details, first-phase shortlisted participants are due to be announced on 13 November 2026. Registration and submission have already closed. The registration deadline was 20 October and the project submission deadline was 30 October. This is an update for people who entered or want to understand the programme, not an invitation to submit a new entry.
What participants should watch for
The published schedule sets review and evaluation for 1–5 November. Shortlisted participants are then due to receive coaching and take part in a final evaluation between 16 November and 4 December, with an awards ceremony scheduled for 11 December. Check NISR's website for any changes to those dates.
Projects address agricultural productivity, financial inclusion and poverty reduction, or an open innovation challenge. Teams use NISR data and can also draw on other open or public datasets. The rules assess the problem, data methodology, technology, usability and practical impact.
Does participation lead to an internship?
Not automatically. NISR says final-year Rwandan students from winning teams may be considered for professional internships after completing their studies. This depends on an available internship and the relevant eligibility conditions. The institute also lists laptops as prizes for the first three winning teams.
Applicants should read the original terms carefully: the published rules state that participants agree to transfer intellectual property rights in submitted work to NISR. That is a significant condition to consider before entering a future competition, alongside the rules on original work and disclosing AI assistance.
The schedule and conditions were checked on 5 November 2026.
