Tips for this CV
- Public service posts go through the MIFOTRA e-recruitment portal, so keep your dates, employers and qualifications ready to type in as well as on your CV.
- If your degree or diploma is from outside Rwanda, say whether you hold an equivalence certificate from the Higher Education Council (HEC). It takes about 10 working days once your file is complete, so don't leave it until an advert closes.
- Say how well you use each language: Kinyarwanda, English, French and Kiswahili where they're true for you. Many employers here work in more than one.
- Leave out your photo, your national ID number and your marital status unless the advert asks for them.
- A criminal record certificate takes 21 days on Irembo. If you're aiming at jobs that ask for one, apply before you need it.
A plain one column CV is easiest for a recruiter or an applicant system to read, so that's what this tool makes. There's no photo field. Rwandan employers can ask for your papers later, and a CV doesn't need your ID number, your marital status or a picture unless the advert says so. Your draft is kept in this browser until you delete it, so you can come back and change it for the next job.
What a Rwandan employer wants to see first
- The job you're applying for, or a one line summary of your field.
- Your jobs or internships, latest first, with what you actually did and a number where you have one.
- Your qualification, the school and the year.
- Your languages, and how well you use each one.
- A Rwandan phone number you answer, and an email address with your real name in it.
Papers you may need alongside your CV
If your degree is from outside Rwanda, the Higher Education Council issues an equivalence certificate. It costs RWF 60,000 for Rwandans and takes 10 working days once your file is complete. A criminal record certificate from Irembo costs RWF 1,200 and takes 21 days, and it's valid for 6 months. The police recruitment portal names one among its documents. Start both early, because each can take longer than the time an advert stays open.
Change it for each job
One CV sent to fifty adverts rarely gets far. Save your full version, then cut and reorder it to match each advert. Use the words the advert uses, when they're true for you. Our CV and advert word check shows which main words you've missed.
Questions people ask
Should I put a photo on my CV in Rwanda?
Leave it out unless the advert asks. It takes up room and can confuse the software some employers use to read CVs.
How long should my CV be?
One page if you're starting out, and two pages once you have a few years of work behind you.
Does this tool keep my data?
It stays in this browser only, on this device. We never receive it. If you're on a shared computer, use Delete my draft when you've finished.
