The sum is your gross monthly pay divided by your monthly hours. The order names no monthly divisor, so we use 40 hours x 52 weeks / 12 months, which is 173.33 hours. Gross 400,000 / 173.33 = RWF 2,307.69 an hour, so 10 extra hours not given back as rest come to RWF 23,077 before tax, paid in the next month. If your contract sets fewer hours, change the weekly hours box, because the order then uses the hours you agreed.
Is overtime paid at time and a half in Rwanda?
Not by law. Ministerial Order 01/MIFOTRA/23 sets no 1.5 or 2 rate. It says hours worked during the day, at night, on an official holiday or at the weekend are the same and are paid equally. That's why this calculator has one rate, at 1 x your normal hourly pay. Tools from other countries will give you a different answer here. Your contract may promise more, and if it sets a rate for an extra hour, that rate applies.
What the order gives you
- Overtime is any hour after 40 a week, or after the lower number in your contract or the internal rules.
- It's worked at the employer's request, for work that's urgent, exceptional, seasonal or of a special nature, or to keep up or raise productivity.
- The employer records it in a register or electronically, and you sign to confirm it.
- You get time off equal to the extra hours within 30 days. If you don't, the hours are paid in the next month and appear on your payslip.
- After a power cut, an accident or bad weather, your pay isn't cut, and the hours can be made up within 30 days.
Who it doesn't cover the same way
Public servants get time off within 30 days and no cash at all: the order says money for overtime is prohibited in the public service. If you work a public holiday, Law 66/2018 gives you full pay and an equal rest within 30 days.
Questions people ask
How many hours is the working week in Rwanda?
40 hours, in effect from 1 January 2023. A rule of 45 hours comes from the 2020 order, which has been repealed.
Is overtime pay taxed?
It's part of your pay, so the amount here is before tax. It lands on top of your salary, so it's taxed at your highest band. At RWF 400,000 gross that's 30%.
My employer doesn't record my extra hours. What can I do?
Keep your own dated note of the hours. Raise it first with your employer or your employees' representative. The law's next step is the labour inspector for your area.
